The pepper behind Nando’s peri-peri sauce. Capsicum frutescens, native to Mozambique and Angola, carried to Africa by Portuguese traders. Small, pointed pods with clean, intense heat. The name comes from Swahili. Dries exceptionally well and is fundamental to Portuguese-African cooking. This is the real piri piri — not a renamed bird’s eye. Heat is serious. Productive plant with prolific pod set.
