Capsicum friburgense was described by Bianchetti and Barboza and is endemic to a single narrow pocket of ground near Nova Friburgo, in the mountains of Rio de Janeiro state, at around 1,750 metres. It grows nowhere else on earth. The flower is unlike anything else in the genus: bell to urn shaped, held upright and bent at the neck, and coloured lilac-fuchsia straight through with none of the white or green markings the other Capsicums carry. Botanists use it as a diagnostic character because nothing else looks like it.Plant runs 24 to 30 inches. Treat this as a plant you are keeping rather than a pepper you are harvesting. What you are getting: a seedling, minimum 8 weeks old and at least 6 inches tall. It is not a finished plant. It will need transplanting into a container, so choose the container accordingly: these will grow in anything from a half gallon up, but the pot determines the yield in many cases, and some varieties do better than others in a small one.If it is going outside: harden it off first. Give it a few hours a day somewhere sheltered and out of direct sun, and build that up over a week or so before it lives outdoors full time. A seedling put straight out is a seedling you can lose.Feeding: do not fertilise for the first two weeks. After that, use a balanced fertiliser.More on this variety, and on growing peppers generally, at wikipepper.org.
