Species: C. annuum Mature pod color: Black Pod form: Standard tapered Heat: 5,000-30,000 SHU (Medium) Days until harvest: Late 80-90 Plant height: 24 to 30 inches Light: Full sun (6–8+ hrs) Growing temperature: 70-85°F (21-29°C) Planter size: 1 gallon minimum, optimally 3–5 gallons (11–19 liters) SKU: PP-TASMANIANBLACKTREE-A The black pods are the draw. This C. annuum ripens its standard tapered fruit through a deep near-black before red comes through underneath, and the plant carries dark foliage to match.5,000 to 30,000 SHU, so the heat is real but manageable. Anthocyanin is what makes the black, and it develops in the sun: the more light the pods get, the darker they go.What you are getting: a seedling, minimum 8 weeks old and at least 6 inches tall. It is not a finished plant. It will need transplanting into a container, so choose the container accordingly: these will grow in anything from a half gallon up, but the pot determines the yield in many cases, and some varieties do better than others in a small one.If it is going outside: harden it off first. Give it a few hours a day somewhere sheltered and out of direct sun, and build that up over a week or so before it lives outdoors full time. A seedling put straight out is a seedling you can lose.Feeding: do not fertilise for the first two weeks. After that, use a balanced fertiliser.More on this variety, and on growing peppers generally, at wikipepper.org.
